Burke St John Trend

The ashes of Burke St John Trend, Lord Trend of Greenwich and his wife are buried in the east cloister of Westminster Abbey. He was High Bailiff of Westminster and Searcher of the Sanctuary (an appointment made by the Dean of Westminster) from 1983 to 1987. A new blue-grey stone was laid down when his wife's ashes were buried. The inscription reads:

Burke St John Trend Baron Trend G.C.B. C.V.O. P.C. High Bailiff of Westminster. 2 January 1914-21 July 1987 and also his wife Patricia Charlotte Trend 14 May 1919-25 September 2008.

He was born in Greenwich in south London, son of Walter Trend, a journalist, and his wife Marian (Tyers) and educated at Oxford. In the Civil Service he worked for the Ministry of Education and the Treasury and as an assistant private secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Later he was secretary of the cabinet and served under four Prime Ministers. In 1974 he was created a Life Peer and rector of Lincoln College Oxford. In 1949 he married Patricia Shaw and they had two sons and a daughter.
