Celebrate Holy Week and Easter with us

A specially recorded Meditation for Holy Week will be available to watch on the Abbey website from 4.00pm on Monday 29 March. Led by the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle, Dean of Westminster, the Meditation will include Passiontide music sung by the Abbey choir, an Address from the Reverend Mark Birch, Minor Canon and Precentor, and prayers led by the Canon-in-Residence, the Reverend Anthony Ball.

Worshippers around the world are also invited to join the Abbey as we livestream the Vigil and First Eucharist of Easter on Saturday 3 April at 8.00pm.

The service, which begins in darkness, is marked with the lighting of the Easter Candle, symbolising Jesus passing from death to life. The resurrection light is then shared among those present.

This is followed by a short vigil of readings, interspersed with psalms and canticles, and renewal of baptismal vows by the sprinkling of water. The service will be sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey, conducted by James O’Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers. Worshippers can join the broadcast service live or catch up afterwards on the Abbey website.

On Easter Day, we are delighted to be sharing a new film of St John’s Gospel read by actor Sir David Suchet in the Abbey’s historic Jerusalem Chamber. This will have its YouTube premiere on Easter Day at 4.00pm.

A limited number of tickets are also available to attend our Holy Week and Easter services in the Abbey in person.

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Reverend Dr David Hoyle, said:

'We may not be able to assemble as we would like, or sing as we are used to, but we can still follow Christ on the journey to the cross and the garden.  Doing that, we overcome that isolation that has been such a sad, but necessary experience for so many months.  This week we enter more deeply into the life of Christ and find our place again amongst the people of God, travelling together, in hope, towards hope.'
