Free Sunday organ recitals resume
Thursday, 3rd September 2020
Regular Sunday organ recitals begin again at the Abbey this week after a five-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The first concert, at 4:30pm on Sunday 6th September, will be given by the Abbey’s Sub-Organist, Peter Holder. The programme for the free, 30-minute recital will include Litanies and Variations sur un thème de Clément Janequin by Jehan Alain, and Maurice Duruflé's Prélude et Fugue sur le nom d'Alain.
The concert series will continue over the coming weeks as the Abbey organists present a wide range of music each Sunday afternoon:
- 13th September: Matthew Jorysz, Assistant Organist
- 20th September: James O’Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers
- 27th September: Matthew Jorysz
- 4th October: Peter Holder
- 11th October: James O’Donnell
- 18th October: Matthew Jorysz
The Abbey's grand organ is a magnificent five-manual Harrison & Harrison instrument which was installed for the coronation of King George VI in 1937. It can be heard at the Abbey’s daily services as well as at the popular weekly concerts.
Places at the recitals are free, but to ensure social distancing, tickets must be booked in advance.
